Unilife Management Team

Unilife and its subsidiaries together employ over 170 staff members.  Since the relocation of its core operational and commercial functions from the Australia to the US, Unilife’s engineering, quality and marketing capabilities have been significantly expanded to support core projects such as the Industrialization Program for the UnifillTM ready-to-fill Syringe.

Executive Management Team

Richard Wieland, BA, MBA (Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer) has served as the CFO of four NASDAQ-listed companies within the life sciences industry, and as a senior executive of two New York Stock Exchange-listed companies during his 30 year career. Prior to joining Unilife, Mr. Wieland served as the CFO of Cytochroma Inc., a privately-held specialty pharmaceutical company, and served as Executive Vice-President and CFO of Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company.

Bernhard Opitz, MSME (Senior Vice-President, Operations) has almost 30 years medical device and biotechnology experience and has held senior leadership positions with global industry leaders including Bayer AG. Core specialties include device innovation and productivity improvement initiatives.

Eugene Shortall (Senior Vice President, Business Development) is a highly experienced manager of major construction projects in Europe and the Middle East. He is overseeing the construction of the new facility and is responsible for the development and implementation of the Industrialization Program for the UnifillTM ready-to-fill syringe.

Stephen Allan, BCOM (Vice President, Marketing and Communications) has more than 15 years of media, government, and public relations experience and is responsible for all communications, public relations, and public affairs activities undertaken by the Company on a global level.  ;

Mark Hassett, B.Sc. (Vice President, Sales) has more than 25 years experience in the sales and marketing of medical device and pharmaceutical products within the acute care, alternate site, pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets. 

Mark Iampietro, BSc (Vice-President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs) has more than 30 years of quality experience across global pharmaceutical, biologics, and medical device markets. At Unilife he focuses on the development and maintenance of international quality and regulatory systems.

Dennis Pyers, BSc, CPA (Vice-President and Controller) joined Unilife after 25+ years with KPMG, a global audit, tax and advisory service firm with over 100,000 employees and over $20 billion in revenues. He oversees the the Finance and Administration and SEC Reporting functions of Unilife.

Tim Spang, BSc, MBA (Vice President, Manufacturing)has over 17 years of progressive experience in high tech manufacturing in both Europe and the U.S. in medical devices and related industries. He specializes in international business and product development.

David Watson, BSME, MSME (Vice-President, Engineering) has more than 30 years engineering experience with multinational IT and life science leaders at major companies including Fujitsu, Biotronik and IBM, and holds patents in the fields of automated equipment and technology products.

Gerald Verollet, PhD (Vice-President of Scientific and International Affairs) is the former head of the World Health Organization's (WHO) medical device division and is dedicated to supporting injection safety practices. .

Tom Westbye, BSc, (Vice President, Research and Development) has more than 30 years executive experience in medical device manufacturing including developing market-leading passive safety devices used in prefilled glass syringes and co-developing the first re-usable auto-injector.

Christopher Naftzger, BA, JD, (General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Chief Compliance Officer) has fifteen years experience. Formerly with Chesapeake Corporation, as assistant general counsel and assistant secretary, he managed negotiations for multi-year / multi-product supply contracts with a number of leading pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. Mr. Naftzger provides the management team and Board of Directors of Unilife with counsel on all international, legal and government matters as well as corporate finance and SEC regulation.

Cynthia Lighty, BA, JD (Director, Human Resources and Legal Services) is Assistant Secretary for the Company and has 23 years of experience as a practicing attorney as well as managing human resource departments with large organizations.  She is experienced in corporate compliance, managing litigation, and labor and employment law.


Management Team

Dan Adlon, BSc (Director, Design Engineering) has more than 25 years medical device and automation expertise including new product development, sales, engineering, manufacturing, strategic planning, and program management, and has been instrumental in securing multimillion dollar contracts.

 Francois Caudrillier, BSc, MS, MBA, (Director, Automation) has over twenty years experience in automation engineering. His areas of expertise include integration of multiple lines, stations and custom built equipment, and machine and process development.

John Davis, BSc, MBA (Director, Process Development) is a plastics engineer with almost 20 years experience in medical device and pharmaceutical packaging, process development and thermoplastic conversion technologies.

Tina Hager, BA (Director, Finance and Administration) is the Assistant Treasurer for Unilife and is an experienced financial manager, accountant and controller with an extensive background in managing financial and administrative functions.

Deborah Karlak, BA, MSA (Director, SEC Reporting) has 15 years experience and specializes in the preparation of consolidated annual and quarterly financial statements, footnotes and related disclosures for SEC reporting requirements, including 10-K and 10-Q documents.

Griselda Madrid, BS, MBA (Director, Supply Chain) specializes in purchasing, logistics, and warehousing. In the medical device field, she has a stellar track record of process improvement and has consistently lead projects that have increased sales and quality while reducing costs. She is a Black belt certified, Lean Six Sigma master.

Susan Moran, RN, BSc, MSc, (Director of Clinical Affairs,) has 27 years of diverse experience in the healthcare industry. She has been heavily involved with clinical trials in various stages of product development, which involved writing protocols, site management, and final reporting, for companies such as Therapeutics Inc and Cutanea Life Sciences.

Graham Purches, PhD, (Director, RTFS Operations) has 15 years experience with global medical devices leaders in fields such as sleep apnea and is trained in Six Sigma - Black Belt (2007) as well as FDA GMP systems.

Masoud Samandi, MSc, PhD (Senior Director, RTFS Program) joined Unilife from Becton Dickinson and Company (BD), where he was Senior Staff Engineer and Core Team Program Leader for several business units, in which he established and led a company-wide team to integrate and streamline disparate needle-based product/process development activities while managing a budget of more than $5MM.

Daniel Ziroli, BSc, (Director, Information Technology) has 125+ years experience and has overseen the implementation of ERP, Laboratory, Warehouse Management, Process Automation, and Quality systems at global pharmaceutical companies including Boehringer Ingelheim.
