Mechanical Designer
Job Summary:
The Mechanical Designer reports directly to the Director of Engineering and creates and modifies detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (AutoCAD and Solidworks) from sketches, layouts or notes provided by engineering staff.  The Mechanical Designer contributes design modifications to facilitate improvements to manufacturing operations or quality of product.  The Mechanical Designer checks drawing plots versus the project input for correctness and conformation to standards and works with engineers regarding model accuracy, design, drafting standards and documentation.   The Mechanical Designer also develops and applies CAD software engineering methods, theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of technical problems.  The Mechanical Designer assesses architecture and hardware limitations, and plans the design and development of technical projects in CAD software.  The Mechanical Designer defines and selects new approaches in the implementation of CAD engineering applications and design specifications and parameters and develops routines and utility programs.  The Mechanical Designer prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval, specifies materials, equipment and supplies required for completion of projects, and evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services. The Mechanical Designer uses CAD software to develop and design automation machines, equipment, systems, devices, and fixtures to satisfy specific requirements.  The Mechanical Designer performs detailed design activities to determine needs and translate them into functional machine solutions, including generation of operations manuals and instructions.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Determine machine and sub-assembly requirements, working from product specifications, samples, and process concepts.  Evaluate needs and translate them into feasible and economical equipment solutions, having identified critical performance functions.
  • Determine specifications for materials, electronic components, construction and performance, including equipment speeds, tolerances, material handling techniques, etc.  Meet time schedules and cost estimates on design projects.
  • Sketch, design, and lay out machine systems, machine mechanisms, including sub-assemblies, tooling, framing structure, motors, drive components, sensors, and accessory devices.  Consider factors such as ease of setup, changeover and maintenance, reliability, biocompatibility, contamination control and economy.  Select standard parts for incorporation into machine design.  Assist in the development of I/O listings, Bills of Material, Timing Diagrams and Process Flow Diagrams.
  • Participate in design review meetings to evaluate design requirements and develop fabrication plans.  Modify designs to meet requirements, to simplify design, or make other improvements.  Identify possible product modifications to improve manufacturability.
  • Define, request, and coordinate the purchase of materials, components, equipment, and support services for the construction, assembly, and conditioning of prototype parts and machines.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.  Work with manager and peers to improve all aspects of engineering in support of business plans.  Support peers and immediate supervisor by anticipating problems, offering solutions and continuously improving the function of the department.  Work primarily as an individual, but also work in a team environment, accomplishing any other duties as required.
Education/Experience Required:
Minimum of an Associate of Science degree in engineering or related field.  Minimum of five years machine design and development experience in small part, high speed manufacturing systems.  Must have extensive background in machine shop capabilities and electronic devices and controls and extensive knowledge and experience in CAD, Autocad and Solidworks.  Thorough understanding of plastic and metallic part assembly, bowl feeders, product handling, part transfer and fixturing, process tooling, pneumatics, lead screws, cam devices, stepper/servo motors, drive systems, slide systems, sensor technologies and application, and machine control systems required.  Must be PC literate in Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Project.

Physical/Mental Demands of Job:
This position is primarily office and computer driven.  However, the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the entire workforce and suppliers is an essential job function.  The ability to perceive all aspects of the work environment, product and component samples and documentation is essential.  This position requires a strong work ethic, planning and organizing skills, a continuous improvement mindset, attention to detail, excellent time and document management skills and the drive to complete and follow-through for completeness.   The ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast changing work environment is essential, as is positive interaction with others.  Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and meet established timelines.  Must be able to maintain self-control in challenging circumstances and be reliable in attendance and punctuality.
